A canoe is a long narrow boat you move with a paddle. You sit in it, or you kneel. You push the water with a paddle that has one blade. There is no motor. There is no sail. There is you and the paddle.

That is the whole thing. The rest is detail.

Canoe or kayak

Both boats move with a paddle. The paddles are what differ.

A canoe paddle has one blade. You pull the water on one side, then the other. You sit higher up, so you see more around you.

A kayak paddle has a blade at each end. You sit lower, closer to the water, and your legs are usually inside the hull.

For a first time on the water, the higher seat of a canoe tends to feel easier.

What about a SUP

A SUP is a wide board you paddle standing up. It asks for balance. A canoe is done sitting down, and the balance is there from the start. If this is your first time, a canoe is the gentler way in.

What happens in a first session

There is a short talk on the shore first. You learn how to hold the paddle and how to turn. This part takes about ten minutes.

Then you put on a life jacket and get in. For the first few minutes the boat feels odd. That is normal. It passes quickly.

After that you go at your own pace. There is no race. If you tire, you stop and look around.

Do you need to be fit

No. Paddling is more about rhythm than arm strength. With the right stroke you use less than you think.

Do you need to swim? You do not need to be a strong swimmer. It helps to be at ease near water. And the life jacket stays on the whole time.

What to wear

Wear clothes you do not mind getting wet. In summer bring a hat and sunscreen. You get a small dry bag for your phone.

Where to canoe in Istanbul

There are a few spots. Haliç, Göksu and Salacak are the best known.

Salacak is a fishing harbour in Üsküdar. It faces the Maiden’s Tower. It is sheltered from the hard currents, so beginner sessions mostly run from there.

Our Bosphorus session starts there too. A guide comes along, it runs about an hour, and no experience is needed.
